Ultimate Guide to Gen Z Food- Preferences Revealed and Habits Uncovered
We are the foodie generation (no doubt in that). From dolma aunty ke momos to tom uncle ki Maggi, from Satya to Hudson, we’ve experienced it all (while conveniently missing our classes).
We’re more attracted to easily and quickly prepared food with greater transparency of ingredients.
"According to a new study,
Gen Z is most likely to be vegetarian."
"The way we look at food has changed
and now it is more than just taste."
TASTE THE COLOR
Did you know that basic tastes, such as sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and possibly also umami, can be conveyed by means of colour?
Well, it is a fact, that most of the basic tastes are uniquely associated with a particular food source.
Taste of salt with white and blue, sweetness with red and pink, while sourness is associated with green and yellow, and bitterness with browny-black and purple. (Changing the color of wine, can radically alter our tasting experience)
Some people even have the ability to taste colors. This may sound bizarre, but it is very real for some people.
Technically speaking, the ability to taste colors is caused by a condition called synaesthesia which happens when any two of our senses cross over. A synesthete might experience a bitter taste when they see the color purple. (Wondering if you might have it yourself?)
What is rare is when people have a hard time remembering what things look or sound like, but they can immediately identify objects based on their synesthetic flavors.
If I say particularly it is like - They don't know what the color green looks like but know what green tastes like. (Don't feel disappointed you might have some other talents)
HABITS THAT NEVER DIE
We have the most peculiar eating habits. Splitting checks, previewing the menu on Facebook, and even posting online reviews in real-time is the norm.
(Did you check the rating on Zomato before coming to this restaurant?)
The majority of Generation Z is looking for food that fits in with their values. We are attracted to restaurants that use organic, sustainable, and locally sourced produce throughout their menu.
It's a common myth that we like complicated dishes with exotic ingredients. But this is not true, Gen Z are a fan of classy things (Golgappe every time)
On the other hand, there is a willingness to visit restaurants that feature innovative flavors or ingredients. "Try Something New and Unique"- is what I say to my friends all the time.
Well, I never knew despite midnight snacking and having so many ready to eat meals, we are still the healthiest generation. Is it the younger the generation, the greater its obsession with fresh and healthy food?
Yes, even without compromising on our enduring favorites, we continue to focus on fresh and healthy food, says the Food sector industry. (I'll just get this read by my mom)
Our best eating habit is not eating at the right time. We love snacks so much that we are increasing the number of items eaten in between meals while eating smaller main meals. (Its 5, snack time again)
From frozen prepared meals, canned soups, potato chips, to other canned and packaged prepared food such as salads and desserts, we have set a new trend. As Boomer's decrease the inclusion of side dishes eaten with the main meal, younger Gen Z consumers like us are eating more traditional snack foods and side dishes as a convenient way to make up the main meal. Side dishes on the rise include fresh vegetables, potatoes, fruit, salty snacks, and rolls. (Relatable, isn't it?)
IT'S NOT THE END
Saving the best for the last. Here is an interesting tactic used by Starbucks.
It is a common thing to have your name misspelled on your venti caramel macchiato. But have you ever paused and thought how could Starbucks be so bad at names? Even the simpler ones?
One YouTube video suggests they're really not that clueless, and they're doing it on purpose. But why?
There's an interesting theory behind this-
What's the first thing you do when you get a hilariously misspelled name on your cup? You post it on social media, don't you? The video argues names are misspelled on purpose just so you do exactly that. You're actually giving them free advertising!
